    I knew a real estate agent and his partner in the early 80s who were big producers in the San Fernando Valley. One had an old Rolls Royce as his transportation, but his partner told me at lunch one day that most of the time it was in the shop and the guy rode the bus. He said he's the only multimillion dollar producing real estate agent who rides the MTA.

    He also said that in LA, because you can't drive around with your house on your car, the car is your expression of your wealth, hence the German sports cars and other displays of wealth.

    I'll never forget that meal and the discussion because we shared the appetizer and he and I both got food poisoning.
