BANZAI7 NEWS--After six weeks of closely watching the spread of H1N1 swine influenza across the globe, the World Health Organization (WHO) today declared the outbreak an official pandemic, raising the threat alert from 5 to 6, its highest level.
Officials were careful to note, however, that the announcement reflected the flu's reach, not its severity. As of Thursday afternoon, the organization had tallied 28,774 cases and 144 deaths in 74 countries. Margaret Chan, the WHO's director general, called an emergency meeting when officials noticed a sudden rise in cases around the world, particularly in Australia.
"At this early stage, the pandemic can be characterized globally as being moderate in severity," the WHO said in the statement, urging nations not to close borders or restrict travel and trade.
