WHY CAN'T PLANES FLY THROUGH VOLCANIC ASH

    When I flew from Perth to Singapore in the 1980s, it was right after the volcano had erupted in Indonesia and there was a plane that lost all four engines for a while.

    Our plane went way out of the way to avoid the plume after that incident.
